1st Rotaract Mediterranean Intercultural and inter-religious dialogue

The 1st Rotaract meeting on “Mediterranean Intercultural and inter-religious dialogue” took place on 9 September 2017 in Napoli, generously hosted by the University of Napoli L’Orientale, in the prestigious “Palazzo du Mesnil”.

The meeting, organized by Valerio Carafa, Rotaract District 2100 delegate for MED Mdio, and in line with MED Mdio values, brought together high-level speakers that contributed to tackling the problem from different point of view. Among those is worth mentioning Sen. Francesco Maria Amoruso, Honorary President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), Prof. Andrea Pisani Massamormile, Delegate of Napoli of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta S.M.O.M.  (Grand Priory of Napoli and Sicily), Mr Francesco Socievole, Past District 2100 Governor and founder father of the MED Mdio, Mr Vincenzo D’Elia, past President of the Rotary Club Napoli Nord and assistant to the Governor and Mr Luciano Lucania, District 2100 Governor.

Furthermore, the Conference included a Panel on MED Mdio origins and what MED Mdio is nowadays, its strategies and its goals, thus to show to young rotaractors, to Rotarians and in general to those who still don’t know, what MED Mdio is and work for. During the Panel, MED Mdio was represented by Lucky Dalena, Italy Country Rep for MED Mdio, that precisely described MED Mdio actions and values.

Participants engaged with passion during the discussion on the main challenges of the intercultural and inter-religious dialogue in the Mediterranean region, addressing critical and difficult issues that often are avoided and demonized by media and political parties to raise fear and use it to reach their goals. They offered substantive contributions and shared their experiences about the intercultural and inter-religious dialogue as politicians, diplomats, lawyers, engineers, and academics.

There was consensus on the growing importance of the intercultural and inter-religious dialogue as powerful tools for achieving stability and peace, fighting against violent extremism whilst promoting the values of peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding.

Common values, mutual respect and above all culture as a way to know each other have been identified as the basis for a peaceful and fruitful coexistence of people on both shores of the Mediterranean.

At the end of the conference took place the boat party in the astonishing gulf of Napoli an indisputable pearl of the Mediterranean, a symbol of welcome and harmonious coexistence between different cultures.

Fundamental and precious was the support and the enthusiasm of Francesco Saverio Alovisi, District 2100 Rotaract Representative, that welcomed and supported the idea.
